If you had a big car, Rolex watch, had dinner at the most expensive restaurants, high fashion clothes, a relationship and many friends, would you be REALLY happy?
In our society we tend to define success by external, material things but what good is all this if you’re not happy with it? You can be the most ‘successful’ person in terms of material belongings but if you’re nowhere near having a sense of peace, in my opinion you failed big time. So if you would think of success as a certain feeling you want to achieve, what is your definition of success?
Feel What You Want To Achieve in Life
“We have the procedures of achievement upside down. We go after the stuff we want to have, get, accomplish, and experience outside of ourselves. And we hope, yearn, pray that we’ll be fulfilled when we get there. It’s backwards. It’s outside in.” – Danielle LaPorte
Many of us associate external things such as a big house a wardrobe filled with clothes with happiness (or whatever you want to feel) While in reality if you want to feel happy that feeling can manifest itself in many forms. In ‘The Desire Map‘ Danielle LaPorte tells us how many of us want to chase a certain feeling instead of ‘external success’ and if you focus on what will make you happy, feel peaceful, creative etc. you can lay a foundation to go after what you really want instead of ideas of success which were planted in our heads by society.
My Definition Of Success
Based on what I want to feel everyday in order to feel successful, these are the feelings that I want to set the tone for all projects and goals I go after:
Even though I tried, I was never made to work in an office. I felt like I was forced in a box, almost like a prison by my narrow minded colleagues whose idea of good work had nothing to do with me. Even though I tried to adapt it was against my nature and I didn’t want to listen to people who I didn’t admire or respect.
Now I feel free with the work I do and the people who I work with. I’m free to decide what I want to do with my day, whether it’s taking a nap or blogging. I’m free to go to the beach if the sun is up, just because I feel like it. And I’m free to do whatever I want during the week whether it’s going to Amsterdam or chilling at the park because that’s my choice to make
Having the freedom to make my own decisions and to think for myself is so priceless I wouldn’t change it for any money in the world! Even though some months can be challenging when it comes to money, having my freedom gives me peace of mind and makes me very happy Nothing can beat that feeling, trust me!
Imagine being stressed out all the time or frustrated with how things go. Would you feel successful? I wouldn’t! So being in peace with where I stand, what I’m doing and the people around me is another important ingredient in my definition of success. When I wake up in the morning and look at the blue sky (in the best case ) it makes me feel lucky that I can enjoy the simple joys of life.
I believe we’re here to help each other out and that’s why I feel that fulfillment is another feeling I want to focus on more for the upcoming months. I love writing and blogging but have been wondering if what I write most about makes a difference in people’s lives. I would love for my posts to inspire people to live a better life, make them think differently or make people dream! That’s why you’re going to see new type of posts which I hope you will love as much as I do
I’m a day dreamer with a very vivid imagination and I think that’s the magic combo that has made me such a creative person. And also not having a lot of money growing up! Might sound funny to say this but when you don’t have money you’re forced to come up with something in order to make what you want work. When I wanted new Barbie clothes, my mum said no but she handed me a bunch of fabric and said ‘start sewing’. I had the most fab clothing for my Barbie, trust me, and it also sparked my passion for sewing. I’ve never let obstacles turn me down as I feel that if there’s a will there’s always a way if you really want to and I have my creativity to thank for helping me out with it. Being creative is thinking outside of the box, it’s staying young with fresh ideas in my head and to me also a big part in me feeling successful.
